Smart Bikes: Shimano’s Di2

automatic transmission

The secret’s out: Shimano has just brought bikes into the 21st Century by giving them something cars have had for decades – an automatic transmission.

Most cyclists over or undershift when they ride. Some never figure out the gear system at all. The Di2 system is electronic, smooth and fast. A wheel-mounted sensor monitors the speed and momentum of the bike and shifts up and down through the 16 gears automatically.

The new Nexave C910 concept bike is part of Shimano’s Di2 series. (Di2 stands for Digital Integrated Intelligence). The “Flight Deck” display on the handlebars looks like a Game Boy, but gives you the update on your km/h, distance and gear engagement. There are no shift levers. This bike makes the gear decisions for you.

It also has an automatic suspension adjustment that stiffens or softens the suspension of the bike, depending on which gear you’re using. So your pedaling efficiency and shock absorption are constantly adapting to actual conditions you encounter.

The smart bike isn’t yet available in stores. But Shimano has started introducing it at bike shows around the world to let everybody know the future is here.
