Tektro Auriga Hydraulic Disc Bike Brakes Review Reviewed By:Tim Cameron Reviewed On: November 30, 2004 Product Page:Tektro Price: $300.00 set
The Ride and Test
I set out on a mild day for a 12 mile mountain bike ride where 4 miles is downhill on a steep grade. I want to see how hot the rotors get and I really want to make them smoke so I can get an idea of how well the brakes do under pressure. I had to stop and make a minor adjustment which only took a few minutes and I was off. The brakes felt a little spongy at first but the more I used them the better they felt. I really was pretty tough on them and the bike. I began the 4 mile downhill and wanted to get the brakes very hot if I could so I used them almost all the way down. I brought my digital infarad thermometer with me so I could see how hot they got and do a comparison to my riding partner's Hayes brakes. The Tektro Auriga brakes were 282 degrees when we stopped at the bottom of the hill and the Hayes were 301 degrees. Not a scientific test but the Auriga brakes did seem to be riding cooler.
Conclusion
The Tektro Auriga hydraulic disc brakes for bikes seems to be of very good quality. The aluminum construction should last many years and the levers almost look like Hayes in appearance and feel. They did seem a little spongy at first and are different from hydraulic bike brakes I have used in the past. As with any new product time will tell how well they hold up. I will use the brakes for a while and see how they do and I plan to update this review in a couple of months with the good and bad what ever it may be. Cycling Reviews would like to thank Tektro for making the review possible.
